2009 Autumn Championship Round 3 results - Monday 21 September 2009
Another busy night, this time on Monday due to a booking at the Hall this Friday. The standard of driving is certainly getting better and looking back over the first three rounds of the Autumn Championships there are many drivers showing improvements over their earlier times in rounds 1 and 2 which is great to see.
After trying, at times probably too hard, Lucas Witte-Vermeulen finally found his form tonight and was able to beat the main contender in F2, Cory Kilsby. Not only that, Lucas also secured his first ever grid spot for the A Finals and with new member William Bracey sneaking ahead of Cory in the B Finals, Lucas was able to claw back a couple of points to close the lead that Cory has on him to just one with three more Rounds to go. It couldn't be closer in F2 and Jason Richardson still has a chance if both drivers have a bad week or two!
Two stunning rounds from Paul Campion has seen his lead in the F3 standards grow to seven points, so Mike Savill and Callum Wilderspin need to up their game if they stand a chance of catching Paul. Add to the mix an improving William Bracey and the F3 group is also very close.
This week the F1 drivers actually showed off why they are so good with more wheel to wheel driving without all the bashing that was going on in Round 2! Panic in the first heat when Scott Westbury's transmitter batteries died on him just as the computer was counting down to start! Despite a poor first heat Scott managed to come back strong in the second to secure 2nd for the finals.
As mentioned earlier, Lucas found himself in the A Finals, along with a storming drive from F3 driver Paul Campion. However it was the three leading drivers that kept ahead of the other non-F1 drivers. Andy O'Brien and Chris Hampson had a hard but clean fight this week, though it was a patient Scott that waited until the last few laps to take the lead after the leaders tangled. Andy took an early lead in the second leg of the A Finals which was never going to be beaten as both Chris and Scott were trading places throughout the 5 minute race in what was a titanic battle with neither driver giving an inch - some great racing from everyone tonight.
