Summer Championship Round 1 results - Friday 16 July 2010

Well Round 1 of the Summer Championships was great for some, disastrous for others! However, it's only the first round and drivers can still drop their 2 lowest scoring rounds so there is still time to fight back for those who found themselves at the back due to mechanical or electrical problems.

 

It was great to Maz Yumeda back racing though there was tough competition in the A Final for the Touring Cars with an on-form Andrew Smith and Craig Smith fighting for second place which left Maz to pick up fourth. As useful, Jonathan Robinson was leading the pack all night though he did have a few minor offs during the second round of heats which almost left the door open for Andrew to take the lead. Maybe there is a chance to beat Jonathan as Andrew finished on the same number of laps, great racing guys which is making the F1 class even tougher now.

 

Nick Mulliner is certainly showing progress and with the added grip levels that the carpet now offers, he's pushing for an overall win in the B Final which could be very soon. Paul Campion is just keeping ahead of Nick at present while Joe Holden and Tom Williams need to find their form again if they wish to challenge for a place back in the F1 class at the end of the Championships.

 

After winning in the Micros in the Spring Championships, Steve Earey has migrated to the Touring Cars and his smooth style of driving is paying off. Although Steve may not be fast at the moment, he can get the car around the track without crashing on every lap which means that he's able to stay out of trouble and win the C Final which puts him in a strong position for the F3 class overall. maybe some of his fellow racers need to take note - to finish first, first you must finish!

 

The Micros were few and far between tonight as many were falling off the track with mechanical breakages or motors over heating. While those drivers were left doing a lot of head scratching, Craig Smith took the advantage to blow the competition away in the F1 class with a dominating win over his Championship rivals. However there was a surprise in store for Craig when guest driver Adam Pack stole pole from him in the A Final. Come on Adam, join up and give Craig a fight for the Championship honours this Summer!

 

While his brother was in the pits with a broken car, Callum Wright took the advantage of a few less cars on track in the Micros B Final to beat a battling Luke Westbury and Matt Gammons who were fighting for second place with Luke just pipping Matt into second. Some great racing tonight from everyone as we raced on the carpet with the added benefits of additive for the first time. It was a great start to the Championships and if the racing is as competitive as this week then we are in for some close battles up and down the field this Summer.

The layout used for tonight's meeting was carpet track number 1 which at present is the only layout we've run with the carpet, but more will follow in the coming weeks.
