Summer Championship Round 3 results - Friday 30 July 2010
Another week, another tight battle at the top of the Touring car class! It was action all night long as the drivers negotiated a very tight and challenging track. The grip level on the carpet is starting get better and will only improve as more rubber is laid down each week. A good turnout from the Touring cars, although it was a poor turnout for the Micros. It would seem that fewer drivers are running these cars now, but we shall continue racing them. It could be down to the club investigating the potential for running Mardave mini's as a cheaper alternative to an entry level class of racing - only time will tell...
Although the driving was great to watch all night, throughout the heats and the finals, the marshalling was certainly not up to scratch this week. Several drivers will see their points reduced this week for not marshalling. It is important for all drivers to remember the importance of marshalling as it's all part of the hobby of racing RC model cars - so let's hope for better standards for the rest of the Summer Indoor Championships.
As mentioned above, the Micros were thin on the ground tonight with only 4 cars competing which left Craig an easy drive all night. Good to see Lewis Riley competing again this week after being away for some time. Both Lewis and Nathan Wright had a great race early on in the Micro Final, swapping places several times, but Lewis would then pull out a lead on Nathan which would give him a comfortable second place. It was Luke Westbury's last night racing the Micro, with a move to Touring Cars from next week, let's hope he has more luck with the bigger cars!
During the night, several Mardave Mini's were mixing it with the Micros as we watched to see how they handled the track, with a view of maybe introducing them as a new class of racing. It was great to see them race around the track and it's certainly got a lot of people talking about them - watch this space.
The Touring Cars were split into 4 heats tonight to give everyone plenty of space to race cleaning on the new track, with all drivers racing for their spot in one of three finals. The Touring C Final would see guest driver Adam Pack race wheel to wheel with and under performing William Bracey. The two of them were trading places from start to finish with the lead changing hands 5 times during the 5 minute final! Some great racing, though William knows he should be doing better than racing in the C Final.
The B Final once again had a great battle between Joe Holden and Tom Williams. While Paul Campion lead away from the start, it was Joe who came back from a poor start to take the fight to Tom by midway in the race. Coming back from last, Joe managed to get ahead of Tom with just over 2 minutes remaining with them both then trying their hardest to keep ahead of each other. The pressure was obviously too much for Tom as Joe sneaked through by just over 3 secs to take second place, great driving from both young drivers.
If you looked at the graph for this race you'd think it was a boring one! Nothing could be further from the truth. Yes, the dominating Jonathan Robinson once again kept his cool in the race and secured another top spot, but it was the race behind that had everyone on the edge of their seats! It was a three-way battle between Andrew Smith, Scott Westbury and Maz Yumeda. Andrew lead the pack for mst of the race as both Scott and Maz did everything they could to get past him, a small error from Maz early on put him on the back foot but as he charged back into the race it only pushed Scott further and inevitably closer to Andrew's very wide car! Scott did manage to get through into second momentarily mid=way through, but a charging Andrew took it back on the following lap. It was always going to be close and by the end there was less than 2 sec's splitting both Andrew and Scott, with Maz coming in fourth and only wishing he'd not made the error - let battle commence again in round 4!
Don't forget to visit the Summer Championship points tables to find out the points awarded after tonight's round. The layout used for tonight's meeting was a brand new track on carpet, number 3 which was put together on the night by club member Jonathan Robinson. Nice tight and twisty track that actually produced some great races. Why not take a look at the tracks here to see an example of the layout we used.
